HDB Public Housing Developments in Singapore - 2018
About this report
What this data tells us
Key Insight
This GeoJSON dataset depicts the locations of 82 HDB public housing developments in Singapore, primarily concentrated in suburban areas. The data reveals a significant clustering of projects, suggesting phased development initiatives or strategic land allocation based on population growth and infrastructure accessibility. While there are several locations spread across the island, major concentrations appear in the north, west, and north-east regions. The consistent "LAST_UPDATED" timestamp across all features (20180206) indicates the dataset captures a snapshot of construction statuses as of early 2018. Further investigation with more recent data would be needed to gauge current development trends.
Small Interesting Points of Note
The relatively close proximity of certain polygons (e.g., some projects in Bukit Batok and Yishun) suggests these were likely planned and developed concurrently as large-scale projects. There is no timestamp variation, suggesting the data might be a single point in time. The provided coordinates suggest the projects are within Singapore.
Methodology
- The GeoJSON data was parsed using the `json` library in Python.
- The `features` array containing information on each development was accessed.
- Coordinates from the `geometry` property of each feature were extracted and visually examined using a GIS software for spatial clustering and proximity analysis. No calculations for distances were performed due to limitations of the data format.
- The "LAST_UPDATED" property was extracted to assess the temporal aspect of the dataset.
Footnotes
1The dataset contains headers such as "20112" where "2" is a superscript. The superscript "2" was ignored during the analysis. All analyses were performed on the numerical data in the coordinates and the textual data in the "LAST_UPDATED" field. Further, only features with valid geometry and properties were considered; any missing data was ignored.
